David Bennett of the Advisory Board to the Discover Jazz Festival, and a jazz radio host, talked about the history and importance of the festival. In 1983 several local jazz musicians and jazz enthusiasts, noting that there were many good local jazz musicians and they didn’t often get to be featured on local stages, decided to organize a festival to expose the local community to jazz.

The Discover Jazz Festival which fills Burlington from Church Street to the Waterfront for ten days has grown to be the largest multi-day event in the state.

Some of his interesting facts:

  • When they started the festival in 1984 they even had music on the buses
  • This year they had 85 sponsors donating everything from rooms and food to cash
  • Music has ranged from classic jazz to more diverse jazz programs today
  • Many youth musicians including a group from Moss Point, Miss.

In addition to fulfilling their mission of building community, providing education and an opportunity to discover jazz, the festival is a chance to meeting people including the famous and the ‘will be famous.’
