Charlotte Shelburne Rotary Club

Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009

Trinity Episcopal Church Community Room

Welcome

President John Beal opened the meeting with the Pledge and Kris Engstrom gave the devotional. There were no special guests to be introduced – it was Club Assembly with decisions to make and business to conduct.

A video from Rotary International illustrated the organization and hard work that has helped with the international campaign to eradicate polio – from funding research to organizing clinics, publicizing the clinics on a neighborhood by neighborhood basis, making those contacts with individual families to encourage their attendance, and then helping to staff the clinics.

Announcements

The Double (make that Triple) Match is going well with pledges by club members getting to almost half the slots available.

  • 12/23 meeting is a Christmas/Holiday Celebration, and the induction of Tod Whitaker to the club
  • 12/30 – no meeting

Donation Requests

The club approved a donation of $500 for COTS. More requests are being processed and will be considered by the board at the 12/17 meeting in preparation for approval by the club on 12/23.

2010-2011 Officers

Following the protocol of Rotary, the slate of officers for the 2010-2011 year was presented:

  • President – Linda Gilbert
  • President-elect – Kris Engstrom
  • Vice-president – Adam Bartsch
  • Secretary – John Beal
  • Treasurer – Russ Blodgett
  • At Large – Ric Flood and Jim Spadaccini

The slate is presented a month in advance of the club annual meeting which is scheduled for January 21, giving an opportunity for nominations from the floor. However the enthusiastic members were so excited about the slate as presented that they moved and seconded its approval right then. The motion passed – and presumably the slate will be voted again at the annual meeting.

Sergeant at Arms

Don Condon, in an attempt to ensure long and happy marriages for all members of the club, had asked various club members to share Words of Wisdom related to keeping marriages strong. The”Words” shared by Bob Sanders, Adam Bartsch, Michael Clapp, Bill Deming, Fritz Horton, Denny Bowen, Dave Rice, Terry Kennaugh, John Beal, Ric Flood and Jim Spadaccini, were hilarious – though probably not especially useful. Thanks Don.

Happy fines:

  • Kris Engstrom – her sister has finished radiation treatments; and her niece is pregnant
  • Ric Flood – just happy
  • Terry Kennaugh – he visited New York State and is happy to report that his mother, who is 98, is fine.
  • Jim Spadaccini – his Christmas shopping is done
  • Bill Deming – just happy
  • Dave Rice – happy for all the laughs
  • Denny Bowen – happy to be back
  • Don Condon – the Notre Dam/Dallas gave
  • Jimmy Fayette – happy to be here
  • Gary Marcotte – having a week of vacation – a cruise
  • Sharon Beal – happy to be here at such a great place – son home for the holidays
  • Bob Sanders – for seeing The Logger (who managed to offend everyone) – heading for Seattle
  • Roz Graham – wearing long underwear on such a cold morning – seeing the Canadian Brass and Natalie McMaster – and having a new Dalmatian puppy (photos available if you’d like to see them!)
  • Linda Gilbert – 9 days in Jacksonville, Florida visiting her sister – and attending a Christmas concert
  • Sam Feitelberg – the change of politics in Honduras has simplified the H2H trip.
  • Don Condon – a change in politics sounds good
  • John Hammer – the winter concert for Vermont Mozart was sold out
  • John Dupee – going to Jacksonville for Christmas
  • George Ewins – paying a stack of bills and finding more coming in than going out

Lucky draw:  John Hammer’s number was drawn but he missed the $103 pot.

Remember next week is a celebration – always lots of fun – and maybe laughs.
