John called the meeting to order and shared a Rotary Foundation Thought – Thirty Years ago this year, The Rotary Foundation funded the first Health, Hunger and Humanity Grant Project: to immunize six million children in the Philippines against polio. James L. Bomar Jr., then the RI president, signed an agreement with the country’s government to begin the immunizations, and on 29 September 1979, he administered the first drops of vaccine to a Philippine child. The $760,000 effort set the stage for Rotary’s decades-long commitment to the eradication of polio.
Announcements
Double match: Elaine Dates announced that the Double Match Polio Plus Program begins today and will run until February 28, 2010. Members can write a check to the Charlotte-Shelburne Rotary Club and on memo line, write Polio Plus (give check to Steve Dates). If you donate $50, that will transpose into $150 acknowledged to the program from our club. Last year, we had 21 members from our club donate. Donations count toward Paul Harris points.
Jim Spadaccini announced that he and Paula are hosting the exchange student from Argentina. He is 17 years old and attends CVU. If you are having an event that you would like to invite the student to (or trip that might be interesting for the student), please contact Jim.

If a club member proposes a prospective member and that person joins, the club member’s name will be placed in a basket.
