Charlotte Shelburne Rotary Club
Wednesday, September 2, 2009, 7:30 a.m.
Trinity Episcopal Church Community Room
Welcome
President John Beal lead the pledge of allegiance and the devotional. He introduced two special visitors, Justin Martin of Essex Rotary and Tracy Stolese, owner of Arabesque in Shelburne and a member of Burlington Sunrise Rotary.
Announcements
- Sunday, Sept. 6 – Pancake Breakfast at Shelburne United Methodist Church to benefit Shelburne Community School Wind Ensemble trip to Florida to play at Disney World next spring. Helpers are needed for set up (7:30 a.m.) and tear down (till 12:30), as well as donations of food.
- Wednesday, Sept. 9 – Kids on the Block
- Wednesday, Sept. 16 – Women’s Rape Crisis Center
- Saturday, Sept. 19 – Coordinate parking at the Shelburne Farms Harvest Festival. Some volunteer spots remain. Also Hands to Honduras needs helpers and bakers for their food both at the Harvest Festival.
Leunig’s Fund Raiser
Linda Gilbert reported that Leunig’s had a good crowd on Sunday, Aug. 30 and Hands to Honduras will receive more than $1,000 (a percentage of the evening’s food sales) as well as some good publicity.
Trophy Presentation (well not exactly)
Justin Martin from the Essex Rotary Club came to the meeting planning to present the Golf Tournament Trophy to the Charlotte Shelburne Rotary team (again). Unfortunately the trophy didn’t get to the meeting, so he was limited to congratulating the team, Ric Flood, Don Condon, Robert Maynes and Eric Hanley, and challenging them to do it again next year. We had a second team, Terrell Titus, Bill Deming, Russ Blodgett and Chuck LaClair. Thanks to everyone who represented us. This was the fifth win in the six years of the tournament for Charlotte Shelburne Rotary.
Imagination Library Fund Raiser
Tracy Stolese invited Charlotte Shelburne Rotarians to support an event the Burlington Sunrise Club is hosting on Friday, Sept. 11 as a fund raiser for their Imagination Library Project which sends a book to every child every month who requests it, from birth to five years of age. Their Toast to Literacy event will include wine and beer tastings during the South End Art Hop. There will also be a Chinese Auction with 40 excellent prizes. Tickets are $30 in advance.
Sergeant at Arms
Sergeant at Arms Don Condon kicked things off with a happy fine of his own – his middle daughter, who is in the army, was married last weekend to her fiancé, who is also in the army, at a great family celebration with lots of children, in-laws and grandchildren.
Don also took the opportunity to counsel everyone to write a living will, a document that can save great turmoil for family members in cases in which end of life decisions must be made.
- John Beal – a birthday fine for his wife Sharon – and a happy fine for the new neighbors who have moved in
- George Schiavone – a “classy” fine
- George Ewins – happy and famous – a great story in the Free Press on Monday (marred by the usual reportorial inaccuracies) about George and his back therapy seat cushion that flexes the spine by cycling; a great relief for anyone who sits for long periods, at a desk or in the car. Marketing of the seat will begin in October.
- Bob Sanders – a great week in Maine
- Robert Maynes – his son is being married in Montana next week
- Michele Lash – appreciates being part of a club of generous, thanksful people
- Trafton Crandall – his middle daughter is being married next weekend – and Kris is doing the flowers
- Michael lash – for his neighbor’s daughter’s wedding
- Joan Lenes – welcome to Justin Martin who has been a long-time mentor and friend to her son Peter
- Bill Deming – to Middlebury for a lecture “sports as a metaphor for life.”
- Steve Dates – Ray Brown, a fellow Rotarian, has moved into his neighborhood
- Terrell Titus – welcome to friends Tracy and Justin – and too bad Essex Rotary doesn’t award a booby prize – her team would have won it.
- John Hancock – hoorah for those Red Sox
- Jim Spadaccini – Alex, our international exchange student, arrives Thursday after a 24 hour trip from Argentina
- Ric Flood – the long happy fines will mean short committee meetings
- Debby Hanley – the kids are back to school
Lucky draw: Tracy Stolese drew Michele Lash’s number but she chose the wrong card and didn’t get the $465 pot.
Committees met for half an hour and solved all the problems of the world.
