Charlotte Shelburne Rotary Club
Wednesday, June 10, 2009
Trinity Episcopal Church Community Room
Welcome
President Steve Dates welcomed guest Ross Colvin of Shelburne, Visiting Rotarian Paul Farrar of South Burlington, Visiting Daughter Megan Hanley, and Returning Rotarian Dave Jonah.
Rotary Foundation Thought
In place of the usual Thought, Steve read a letter from the Chair of the TRF $200 million Challenge Grant, John F. Germ, reporting on the success to date of the two year challenge grant and the work left to do:
“We are in the final quarter of the Rotary Year and together we have made great progress towards our goal. To date, we have raised over US $75 million towards our goal of US$200 million. Together Rotarians will reach our goal of raising US$200 million challenge.
“To help us reach this goal, TRF-Direct is available for contributions to both PolioPlus and the Annual Programs Fund. TRF-Direct is The Rotary Foundation’s electronic funds transfer program. It allows you to make contributions to the Rotary Foundation on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. Rotarians may choose to participate either through a checking or savings account or a credit card. Automatic contributions would make it simpler for your club to meet your Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge and Annual Programs Fund goals.”
Announcements
Bowlathon – Ric Flood reported that the Bowling for the Community had been a huge success. $19,232 is currently in, and he expects by the time Tom Glaser, our champion fund raiser, has brought in all his checks; we will be close to $30,000. Ric will be sending out lists to each Rotary member with the names of donors they solicited, so that thank you notes can be sent – and he’ll be sending a sample thank you letter too.
Changing of the Guard Party – Ric Will be hosting the COG Party on Tuesday, June 23 at his home. He’ll need some volunteers to help set up the tent and arrange tables and chairs. A sign-up sheet was circulated for people to indicate who would be attending and whether they would bring an appetizer, side-dish or dessert.
Ad for Twin State Merchants Bank/Rotary Basketball Classic – the Board approved a ¼ page ad for the cost of $100 to support the event since CVU student John Donnelly is participating

Sergeant at Arms
Kris Engstrom presided at her penultimate SAA-ing – she will be missed.
She assessed birthday fines on Chuck LaClair, Steve Dates, Ric Flood, and anniversary fines from Pat Sokolowski and John Beal, as well as pin fines all over the room.
Hawkeye Terrell Titus observed that John Beal was wearing mis-mated socks – he claimed immunity because his foot is still healing … and Ric was teased about wearing no socks – he said he would be wearing socks when he put on his golf shoes later in the morning, but couldn’t wear socks with sandals to the Rotary meeting.
Happy fines:
- Tom Glaser – travel completed and impending
- Linda Gilbert – wearing sox with her sandals proudly – welcome back for Dave Jonah and John Hammer
- Denny Bowen – sophisticated enough to be comfortable wearing socks with sandals
- Kris Engstrom – planted 950 feet of tomatoes and zinnias on Sunday
- Michele Lash – grateful for the people in her life
- Elaine Dates – great publicity for the flower show on Friday and Saturday
- Robert Maynes – happy to have Don Maynard back
- Don Maynard -- happy to be back – and thanks for the flowers
- Russ Blodgett – the Red Sox beating the Yankees
- JohnDupee – echo Roberts sentiments
- Alan Hathaway – glad he wasn’t wearing sandals
- Dave Rice – his father is out of the hospital and recovering
- Fritz Horton – happy Don is back
- George Ewins – his girlfriend slept on his bed last night – she’s a Springer Spaniel
- Dave Jonah – happy to be back from his year-long round the country and beyond trip
- Rosalyn Graham – happy Dave Jonah is back at Shelburne Farms and at Rotary – and happy to have survived a trip to Honolulu
- John Hammer – glad to be back on his feet – sprung from the hospital and from three weeks at home
- Jim Spadacinni – congratulations to Terrell for being so observant (noticed John’s sox) – and wants everyone to know that he is choosing the COG over his regular Tuesday night Poker Game.
- Trafton Crandall – a salute to President-Elect John Beal
- Paul Bohne – back from a trip to Montana for an affordable housing conference and some touring of national parks
- Debby Hanley – good luck to the Rotary Team golfers
Lucky draw: Dave Jonah drew Trafton’s ticket but Trafton chose the wrong card and the $305 pot rolls over.
Guest Speaker

Steven Gamelin and Steve Dates
Steven Gamelin, a professional entertainer, humorist and author, began his talk with enthusiastic praise for the Happy Fines – “that kind of positive energy can be the foundation for the rest of your day,” he said.
He based his talk on his newly published book: 20 to Life in a positive way: Attitude, Action and the Law of Attraction.
Attitude is a state of mind on which your judgements and actions are based. A positive attitude is the difference between climbing a mountain or being stuck in a rut – and associating with negative people drags you down. A negative attitude gains more negativity – like a snowball rolling downhill.
Actions based on attitude put ideas into reality. You can’t just wait for things to happen; it helps to think of actions as the clicks you hear as you ride a roller coaster to the top of the ride – each click is a step forward towards your goal.
Law of attraction – we are magnets, we decide what we want and then take action with laser-focused attention, acting consistently. You are the CEO of your life.
Steven described the Rotary Bowlathon as an example of the success of positive energy.
