Rotary Foundation Thought

This week's Rotary Foundation Thought is about the Permanent Fund.

When reflecting on our personal estates and the legacy we want to leave, have we thought about how much we can afford to give away? Trustee Louis Piconi shares these inspiring remarks:

"Rotarians of today are leaving a legacy to the children of the world when we, Rotary, join our world partners in the celebration of the certification of the eradication of polio from the world. More importantly, and I do mean more importantly, is the fact that the Rotarians of today and tomorrow have the opportunity to leave their own legacy of 'doing good in the world' for future educational and humanitarian service programs. Do we dare dream that Rotarians of today not only make it a habit of making an annual contribution each and every year, but leave a percentage of their estate or a one-time significant gift to The Rotary Foundation's Permanent Fund? This should be the dream, goal and reality of all Rotarians. We need just look and see and feel and touch the wonderful programs and projects we are continually completing that help the world know a more humane society and a more peaceful world."

President Steve Dates notes that less than 1% of people leave anything in their wills to charity.

Kris Engstrom had no birthdays or anniversaries to announce, but she did collect some pin fines.

Happy fines:

  • Kris – a great Easter, Passover weekend
  • Steve Dates – for Elaine’s teaching in Manchester and for his forgetting the gavel
  • Joyce Errecart – for visiting her grandson
  • Michael Clapp – late
  • Dennis Webster – for his daughter’s 31st birthday
  • Sharon Beal – visiting the Crandalls for Passover
  • Ric Flood – for a great weekend in Boston
  • Jimmy Fayette – just happy
  • Bob Sanders – happy that Terry Kennaugh is back
  • Linda Gilbert – a fire on the hill where she lives was a frightening experience and proved that the “no fire” warnings are appropriate.
  • Susan McLellan – interviewed the RYLA candidates
  • Terrell Titus – was a judge for the Future Business Leaders of America competition – “that was a glimpse of the future,” she says.
  • Terry Kennaugh – happy to be back – in Florida where he attended quite a few Rotary meetings, the sergeant at arms assesses a fine on everyone
  • Alan Hathaway – just happy.

Lucky draw:  Pat Sokolowski’s ticket was drawn, but she chose the wrong ticket and missed the $97 pot.

Program

Steve Dates and Jon Aldrich

Guest speaker Jon Aldrich, IBM’s energy conservation manager, described the energy conservation projects the company has implemented, with a saving of 5 million kilowatt hours last year. The company has made a commitment to save energy, with a target of reducing consumption at a rate of 4% a year and individuals, as well as whole departments and management are committed to finding ways to save. Suggestions are evaluated and prioritized base on their potential return on investment, with the results monitored and reported back to the employees.
